XPS and High speed digital print manufacturers

Hi all.

I am interested to hear if microsoft has been involved directly or by third party with hardware manufacturers with respect to XPS (e.g., Xerox etc). These companies tend to support and RIP Postscript or derived technologies such as VPS via Creo RIP to drive their high speed colour printers (such as the Xerox iGen3).

Do microsoft feel that metro is a language that will work alongside postscript in this arena and is there any feeling about whether such manufacturers are likely to adopt this and create a RIP sometime soon?

Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

Ron,
We are working with the printing hardware manufacturers for the development of XPS devices and drivers. Please see the list of adoption announcements at WinHEC 2005 here: http://download.microsoft.com/download/D/A/A/DAA7245D-E01D-46A4-AB70-3A95ED3F6934/DocTechnologiesFS.doc.

With respect to XPS consumption in both software and device RIPs, we are using XPS as a spool file format as well as a PDL that would be a peer to PostScript and PCL in Windows Vista. Please see the follow URL for a third party assessment of XPS as a PDL: http://download.microsoft.com/download/5/d/6/5d6eaf2b-7ddf-476b-93dc-7cf0072878e6/Metro_support.doc.

We expect that both XPS consuming devices and RIP implementations will be available at or shortly after Windows Vista launch.

Hi Daniel

Thanks for taking the time to respond so quickly. I will read this literature, and look forward to any further developments nearer the day, particularly with any of the high speed/volume printer manufacturers.

We are MSDN subscribers and I noticed that Vista Beta has recently arrived. Is a version of an XPS viewer (part of of IE?) part of this release?

Thanks again good luck with XPS.

Ron,

For this first Vista Beta you will have to add the September Windows Presentation Foundation (nee Avalon) CTP to be able to access use the XPS viewer.

Thanks for checking into XPS.

Dear Gregg,

This is a somewhat ackward way, but I am trying to get in contact with you.

We visited On Demand / AIIM last week in Philadelphia, and attended your presentation about XPS and Windows Rights Management Services. We were specifically also attracted by the demonstration that included scanning with a Konica Minolta bizhub C450.

Since I represent Konica Minolta in The Netherlands, I could use your help to get in touch with your colleague in The Netherlands. And of course specifically the person that handles the XPS matter in The Netherlands.

Could you do that for me? (that would be highly appreciated!)

Best regards,

Konica Minolta - The Netherlands
