Package Load Failure
Howdy..
Just got this nasty error and wondered if anyone could help me to resolve it fast?
I have been running Expression Interactive Designer on a test box along with the Cider extensions for VS.. all running sweet...
I installed SQL2005 on the same box for some further testing and now when I go to open a XAML page in designer mode in VS, i get a Package Load Failure with the specific package being..
PresentationDesignVisualStudio
Anyone?
Another strange side effect of this is that now when I went to repair the Cider extensions, it pops up with a dialog that says WinFX is not installed... I can assure that it is, and all to the very latest public release...
Cheers in advance for any help

Hi Brennon,
This error occurs when Cider cannot locate the WinFX components, or the right versions of them. Any repair will have to start there. Does the Expression Interactive Designer still behave correctly?
Have you tried re-installing the WinFX runtime and then VS extensions?
Which versions of the various products (WinFX runtime, VS extensions, Interactive Designer) do you have installed?
thanks
chad
Hello chad...
thanks for taking a look at this for me...
>"Does the Expression Interactive Designer still behave correctly?"
Yes it does... builds to both web and app.. allows build and test
>Have you tried re-installing the WinFX runtime and then VS extensions?
This was my very first approach... it was here that I discovered the unique 'Can't find WinFX' error..
>Which versions of the various products (WinFX runtime, VS extensions, Interactive Designer) do you have installed?
The very latest of everything... May CTP's.. Component 3 Beta 2 WinFX from the CTP download site, same place I got the cider installation...
I would be saying the most serious issue here is that it was running like it should... I Install another product SQL2005 and it all dies...
I could just re-install everything to get this going again, after all, it is on a test box, but that doesn't really help you guys to try and find this error so if it happens again or it becomes an issue in future versions, you will have a better idea of what is going on.
Sorry to repeat but I want to be perfectly clear:
it was here that I discovered the unique 'Can't find WinFX' error..
Was this when uninstalling/repairing the WinFX runtime? Or when reinstalling the WinFX runtime? Or when uninstalling/repairing the extensions?
I've asked the WinFX setup team to take a look and see if they've heard of this, and to find out if they have other troubleshooting ideas.

Cheers Chad,
After re-installing WinFX, I then tried to repair the extensions.
When running the setup application from download, it then produces a dialog box that says:
"Setup has detected that a prerequisite is missing. To use Microsoft Visual Studio Code Name "Orcas" Comunity Technology Preview - Development Tools for WinFX you must have the WinFX runtime installed. Please install the WinFX runtime and restart setup."
The error that shows when I go to preview a XAML page in design mode is:
"Package Load Failure
Package "PresentationDesignVisualStudio" has failed to load properly ( GUID = [E58C2A8B-BCC4-4559-AD59-D62EB6D58A22} ). Please contact package vendor for assistance. Application restart is recommended, due to possible environment corruption. Would you like to disable loading this package in the future? You may use 'devenv /resetskippkgs' to re-enable package loading."
Option Yes or No
Cheers again

Brennon,
I'm still pursuing on the assumption that, somehow, your WinFX installation isn't correct.
Please bear with us and try the following:
- Uninstall WinFX using Control Panel, etc.
- Run the WinFX Uninstall tool (link here) to clean up anything that's left behind.
- Reinstall WinFX, this time downloading a fresh copy (link here); save the file to a new name/location, then run the setup.
On that last step, I want to make certain there's not an errant version of the runtime getting installed out of the IE cache.
thanks
chad
Howdy Chad..
I have completed step 1
I am half way through step 2 and it says
"Warning 26002. The following product(s) is dependent on Microsoft SQL Server Support Files (English). If you uninstall Microsoft SQL Server Setup Support Files (English), they will be broken. Please uninstall those product(s) first. Do you want to go ahead to uninstall Microsoft SQL Server Setup Support Files (English) anyway?
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Tools"
Yes - No
It would appear to me that your uninstall tool just applies a blanket uninstall to anything installed after the initial install date of WinFX. Either case I find it quite strange that SQL would have anything to do with WinFX. You guys need to clean this up, a general user just wont understand what is going on... I am not sure that I do...
I am selecting Yes at this point... I just need to get on with it.
Cheers
Howdy Chad...
Have you read the other post above this one as well?
Ok Completed stage 3.. so I go to repair or install the cider extentions..
First dialog Error...
It says: Must have MSDN documentation for Visual Studio 2005 installed
Click OK - only option
Second dialog Error
It says: Must have MSDN documentation for Visual Studio 2005 installed & WinFX documentation from the Windows SDK installed
Click OK - only option
It will now allow me to click next and continue with an installation
It says installation Complete and successfull...
I open VS and all is happy for a change... It allows me to open the XAML file in design mode..
So to conclude..
all is happy..
most unstable...
and I am frightened to installl anything new on this box...
no just kidding.. but a general user would be and this is my point
Is there anything else you guys want me to look at - post install? Feel free to use this as an oportunity to see what is happening with it.
Thanks Chad
Hi Brennon,
I'm sorry about the difficulty. Clearly this isn't desirable behavior but in the mix of various beta and CTP-level stuff sometimes bad things can happen. Glad to hear you're not blocked, I'll continue to try to get some setup folks to look at this.
thanks
chad
Cheers Chad,
I really appreciate all the help..
I will leave this test box as is for about another week, so any thing the guys need, just ask.
Hi Brennon,
One of the setup team members asks if you can reply and post the following logs, if you haven't flattened the test box yet:
- SQL log from: %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG
- And the all the winfx setup log from: %temp%\dd*.*
thanks
chad

No such animal with the WinFX ones though...
