Power icon problemw

Hello,

I've just installed the Windows Vista Beta 2 (Build 5384) and so far so good, except for one thing: somehow i can't activate the option to show the power icon on the "notification are" of the "taskbar". When i go to the properties of the "taskbar", and then go to the "notification area" options, i'm allowed to select to always show the clock, volume and network icons, but not the power icon. Do you know what can i do to fix this problem? Because of this problem, i never know when the battery is low.

Thanks for your help!!

If your machine is battery-enabled, you should see the battery icon in the tray area by default. You should also see a checkbox in the "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties" dialog box, below the checkboxes for Clock, Volume, and Network. If you don't see the icon and you aren't seeing the checkbox, then for some reason Windows Vista doesn't think your hardware is battery-enabled. What make/model machine are you using?

Hello again...

I thought my machine was battery-enable, but it doesn't shows any battery icon in the tray. And in the "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties" dialog box, below the check boxes for Clock, Volume, and Network, i do see a check box for Power, but the check box is unavailable. I do not understand why... why does this happens? And what can i do to fix this problem? And by the way, my machine is a ACER 4002 WLMi. Everything looks running fine, except this Power icon problem. Can you help me?

Thanks for your time.

Thanks for the additional information. We are looking at the issue. It appears to be hardware-specific.

Mike--

Do you see a battery icon in the system tray? Even if you have multiple batteries, you will only see a single icon in the system tray. This is akin to seeing only one network icon in the tray although you may have a wireless network card and a hardwired network connection. The battery icon will show you the combined time remaining for all the batteries in your system. If you left single click the battery icon, you will see a dialog box. If you have more than one battery on the system, you should see each battery called out in a list at the top of the dialog box.

Thanks ahead of time for the additional information.

You're welcome (for the additional information). I also think it seems to be hardware-specific. And the reason why, is because I found in the "Device Manager" an unknown device. Here is the information about that unknown device:

- On the "General" of the Unknown device Properties:

Device type: Other devices

Manufacture: Unknown

Location: on Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Embedded Controller

Device status: - The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)

- There is no driver selected for the device information set or element.

- To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver

And there is lots of information on the "Details" of the Unknown device Properties, but it would be better if I could sent them in another way (because it's a lot of things/information). Maybe this ACPI driver issue as nothing to do with my Power icon problem, mas it makes me suspect that probably is a Hardware-specific issue.

I hope this new information helps you to help me with my problem.

Best regards.

If am not wrong it is because Vista do not have support for the smart battery system, as with linux, which is working very hard for a driver of thier own. As XP has support for the smart battery system, it isn't too hard to intergrate it in vista I hope, considering that Vista comes packaged with a lot of 3rd party drivers.

Edit: smart battery systems can be found in Acer notebooks, and some other notebooks.

Looks I'm not the only one with that problem. I also tried to install the XP drivers, but with no results too. Lets just hope that people from Microsoft won't take long to come with the solution to our problem.

Do you have Norton 2006 Anti-Virus in your machine? This has occured when I installed it on my notebook.

No... I do not have Norton 2006 Anti-Virus in my machine. I use the home edition of free Alwil Anti-Virus, Avast. But anyway, I don't see the connection between that Anti-Virus issue, and the Power Icon problem. The Power Icon problem it will be resolved with a driver software for this matter. Lets just hope that doesn't take to long.
