Unable to setup windows Vista 5308 (error while displaying image selection wizard)

Hi - I have tried to install the 5308 build on a (older) PC (AMD Thunderbird/512MB/ATI 9000) that I use as a test machine but I keep getting an error message immediately after entering the license key. The error dialog says "An internal Setup Error occurred while displaying the image selection wizard". After a while the setup program will abort and display another dialog "Exception Unknown Exception 0xe0000100 occurred at memory location 0x77e4028b.

Other postings of a similar problem suggested that there was an ISO image download/DVD buring issue. I have reburned at 1x speed. I have re-downloaded the Checked build. I have tried to install this when booting from the DVD with both a Win2K PRO and a WinXP OS hard drive installed (I have a removable drive bay). If I boot up into the windows and then try to run the setup from the DVD, in Win2K I get an error saying that windows vista can't verify the key (and I've verified it several times with both MSDN and it is accepted if I boot from the DVD). Three times I have tried it from WinXP - once I got the above error, once I got a DLL entry point not found, and this last time it actually worked. I got the prompt for updates, and the license agreement. I let it plug away and after 20minutes I noticed that it had rebooted and suffered a BSOD. Rebooted and BSOD - says the windows image is damaged.

What's required to get this to install?

Thanks, Mike Lansdaal

Well, I gave it another go this weekend. Found out some interesting things.

1) Do not let the installer put the dashes in the product key as you get an error that the key cannot be verified. Doesn't happen if you put the dashes in.

2) An upgrade installation only works from a fully patched Windows XP SP2. I was only able to get past the license key prompt when I had a fully patched Windows XP PS2 and selected an Upgrade installation.

3) I was never able to get the setup package to actually start an installation - all I got was an error message stating that my promise Ultra-100 PCI controller driver needed upgrading. Unfortunately, there was not an upgraded driver on Promise's web site that WinXP would recognize.

At this point in time, I'm giving up on installing Vista and am considering the purchase of a new machine

Thanks, Mike

I have been getting the same error with the beta 2, I successfully installed it the first time without any problems (with my completely up to date windows xp sp2) but I got alot of program errors that wouldnt go away becuase of certain programs so i recovered myh old windows without any patches and removed the programs and tried to install Windows Vista but it kept giving me this internal error problem right at the end of installation. I am going to try it again after I update my windows. I think it is this up to date thing

Well, you may be right. However, in my case, I tried to install off of a fresh WinXP install after I went through windows update to download and install EVERY update. Based on my experience, it didn't look like they had driver support for my disk controller (so I just gave up on that). I have upgraded my memory to 2GB on my primary machine and will give that a go (installing into a virtual PC).

I am also getting the same error, I hope some expert from Microsoft gives us some light on this issue because this may be a global bug and it is so frustrating to find the same bug after waiting for 5 minutes until the installer loads up. Ricardo Luzardo

http://msdn.microsoft.com/windowsvista/downloads/products/getthebeta/

You need to be a suscriber in order to download this beta, it seems that in coming weeks a customer preview program will appear for download.

I also got a 0xe0000100 (unknown software exception) at location 0x77733f63 during install on the Installation Screen. I am installing over WinXP SP2 with a Microsoft disc. Would I be better off with a clean install?

I have a problem with installing windows Vista Beta 2 version. I signed up to get the DVD shipped to me. I got the 32Bit and the 64 bit version. My system config is AMD 64 Athlon 3000+, 2 GB Ram, 2x160 GB Sata hardrives and 1 IDe Drive, nvidia 6600 x 2 in SLI mode.

Towards the last stage of installation, I get an error message that says that An error was encoutered when the installer tried to boot into the next stage of of installation (the next stage is "completeing Installation - the last stage). This has happenend all the 7 times I tried to install the OS - and it happens on both the 32 bit and the 64 bit versions. I have tried installting the OS with power connection removed from my Win XP prof SP2 OS loaded hard drive - but to no avail.

Can somebody tell me whats wrong?

I don't remember the original question and can't find it on the sites, but I finally got a full install. I did a fat32 partition and a full format into a clean install. (I used a different hard drive for this. Disconnected original hard drive altogether). I need this hard drive for a backup on another computer I am repairing, so I am going to format it again and reinstall Vista once more when I am done. Wish me luck.
