Problem with workgroup edition installed on a workgroup

Hi,

I followed the step by step guides to installing the workgroup edition. It was installed on a fresh win2k3 server. Both the workstation and the server had the accounts 'Kevin' and 'Administrator' created with the same passwords. The installation completed successfully, and I created a team project whilst logged on to the server as administrator.

The first problem, and perhaps clue, was that I was unable to view the sharepoint sites from my workstation. In the end I resolved this by enabling basic authentication for the site in IIS, and disabling integrated authentication - I'm not clear why this should have been necessary?

Now the main problem. Today, logged on to the workstation, I attempted to create a team project. It failed telling me that I needed content manager permissions on the report server. I checked, and both Kevin and administrator have these privileges. As an experiment as to which credentials were being used by the workstation I removed my privileges, and sure enough I couldn't access the site any more. I added them back in on the server, and could then access the site from the workstation.

I next tried to create the project on the server logged in as administrator, but got the same error. Finally, in case my memory was failing me, I tried to do it logged in as TFSSetup, but got no further.

I also note that in the team explorer for the successful project, both documents and reports have a red cross on them, though work items and team builds don't. Also, I can query and interact with work items. This is true logged on to the workstation as Kevin, and logged on to the server as administrator. In both cases I can go to the Team menu is visual studio, select Show Report Site, and be taken to the report server site without problem.

One final thing (clue?) is that if I look at the source control workspace on the workstation, whilst logged in as Kevin, the owner associated with it is Server\Administrator?!?

A bit more info:

Since these seems to be security related in some way, I tried switching basic authentication of and reverting to integrated. Having done this, I am able to create team projects on the server, logged on as administrator. On the workstation, logged in as Kevin, I now have a variety of problems:

1) Attempting to create a team projects gives me an error creating work items (full log attached at end)

2) Attempting to view a project report site in firefox loops me through entering my name/password, never accepting it. On cancelling it I get a "you are not authorized to view this page". Going to the reports page in internet explorer prompts me for a name/password, but on supplying it takes me to a more general "page cannot be displayed" page.

3) Going to a sharepoint page does exactly the same

On the plus side, I no longer have red crosses on the document and report nodes in the team explorer on the workstation. In fact, from within visual studio/team explorer, I can even view the reports, etc, though not show the project portal, as that attempts to open an external web browser.

TFS does not support Basic Authentication mode in V1.0. There are some server to server calls that will fail to authenticate if Windows Integrated Authentication is not enabled.

It is a bit of a longshot, but the repeated prompts for credentials are sound somewhat like the issue documented in this KB article:

Hi Bill,
I switched back to integrated authentication, and that's how I left it. Anyway, I tried the workaround from the KB article, but unfortunately it didn't help. To summarise my position now:
1) I can use TFS for source control and interact with work items etc without problem on the workstation
2) From within the team explorer on the workstation I can view project reports
3) I can't create a team project on the workstation, but I can on the server, and then I can use that project on the workstation
4) I can't view any pages on the default web site for the server, including the main sharepoint site and all the team project sites from the workstation. I can view them on the server.
5) Using internet explorer I am asked once for credentials, then taken to a page not found page. Attempting to refresh or otherwise revisit the page using the same browser just go straight to page not found (no request for credentials). A new browser repeats the process from the request for credentials. Using firefox I am repeatedly asked for credentials until I cancel, at which point I get taken to a "you are not authorised" page.
6) On the workstation I can view other web sites on the server, including the sharepoint admin site, and the virtual server management site
7) From my office workstation, connected to the home system by a router-router VPN, and using pass through authentication with an account with matching password on the home server and office domain, I can view the site without problem and without a request for credentials.
So, I am able to work around the problems, though it's not really ideal. I'm the only developer using the server so lack of access to the sharepoint site isn't as critical as it might have been, though I do miss the facility to use it for project document storage, and occasionally process guidance. Again, I can work around the latter by terminal servicing to the server, but that's too much mucking around for the former.
Can you think of anything else I could do to investigate this? I'm wondering if it's worth using ethereal to monitor the traffic, but I wouldn't really be sure what I'm looking for. I'm also not convinced that the problem would be apparent in the trace.

The IIS logs are probably the best place to start. We are looking for the logs for the Default Web Site since that is where SharePoint lives. To find the log file location, open IIS Manager on the TFS AT, expand Web Sites, select Properties of the Default Web Site and then Properties on the Web Site tab to get the log file location and name details.

The IP address of the client appears in the log, so that should help you find the relevant log entries. The interesting thing here is the username and response code. A normal Windows Integrated Authentication handshake will look like this: (username = '-', response = 401.2), ('-', 401.1), (<domain>\<user>, 200).

You say in point 3 that you cannot create a Team Project. Is the failure due to SharePoint or is it something else?

In your original post, you mentioned that the owner associated with the workspace in the Source Control Explorer was server\administrator even though you were logged in as server\kevin. Is that still what you see?
