The error coming from the emulator indicates that you are missing the Virtual Switch driver which should be installed along with your emulator installation. In the network properties of the desktop or virtual pc network adapter, you should see an entry called "Virtual Machine Network Services. If you have a Beta2 build, you should be able to reinstall this driver by reinstalling the emulator package (vs_emulator.exe) from your installation cds/dvd.

Another solution is to connect your emulator through ActiveSync instead of activating the emulator's network adapter. You can do so through the Device Emulator Manager, available from the "Tools" menu. From the manager, you can virtually craddle an emulator so that ActiveSync will connect to it. You can use the "Get Connected" wizard from ActiveSync, or select the "DMA" option in the connection settings. Note that ActiveSync only supports one connected device at a time, so make sure you do not have any connected device when you do this. Afterward, you will be able to use the virtual pc network connection as if a real device was connected to this computer.
