Beta Windows Defender updates

I have a problem with the updates in Defender, first it would not install, now it wants to install the same update over and over. If I cancel the update it pops up again. The update is a Definition update 1.14.1325.6 for Beta Windows Defender(KB915597). I looked at my history of updates and it is now installed six times.

Also same issues with defender beta 2. many updates many times keeps trying. Originally had the same problem with one care live. Uninstalled one care and reinstalled.. that fixed that one. Tried (same) with defender.. did not work. has insalled 7 times at this point. NOT a good sign for this product at this point I must say...

I changed the way i get my downloads, instead of having them tell me it is time to install I went back to automatic install without asking , so far its working.

It looks like I've got both of you beat......I can count at least 25 times the computer has TRIED to download &install the definition update and 25 times it has failed. I can count 10 times using "other sources", 10 times using "automatic", and 5 times using MicroSoft update. Sooooo, going to automatic install does not work for me. Anyone got any more ideas? ? ? ? ?

Below is from a post on a different thread regarding this issue. I was experiencing it as well. I ran the command below and told Defender to update and it finally worked. Hope this helps and thanks to Jim (JimR1).

This is a pretty common Defender issue. What seems to help a lot of times is deleting the previous definition file. To do this go to Start>run>Msiexec /x
{A5CC2A09-E9D3-49EC-923D-03874BBD4C2C} . Answer yes to the window that asks "Do you really want to delete this file?". Check for updates and Defender should update to the latest definition file.

I have tried that method but still could not update window defender. On the error messege mentioned: window defender was unable to complete the update: 0x80072efd.

Btw, on my taskbar always blink "spyware alert", but after I scan using window defender, it could not detect the spyware. What should I do?

Any suggestion?

Thanks,

Navigate to C:\program files\windows defender and delete MpAsDesc.dll

This is the definition file and once deleted, use windows update or microsoft update to update your definitions. This worked for me since I get the same error code every time when checking for updates using the Defender software.

I have updated Defender 21 times since April 07 2006, with

1.14.1389.7 (KB915597) with automatic update, with microsoft update, and other source as it says on my history update review, and with tonights update with the other Windows XP and Office 2003 update. I rechecked to see if they updated and installed, they all did on the history update review including the 1.14.1389.7 (KB915597), But it still says i need to update and install 1.14.1389.7 (KB915597) again! Do i need to turn off my automatic update so it will not update and install the 1.14.1389.7 (KB915597) forever every night?

Same problem, but now with update 1.14.1402.2. I tried your fix but got the message: "The installation source for this product is not avaliable. Verify that the source exists and you can access it." I then tried uninstalling and re-installing Defender but then it wouldn't update at all with the error message 0x8007064c! After a System Restore, I tried deleting the definitions file through Installer Clean up followed by another re-install and Defender wouldn't then start at all with the error message "MSVCR80.dll is missing. Try re-installing" I did, a few times. No luck at all, same problem, so back to System Restore and the original problem. Update 1.14.1402.2 just keeps re-installing itself over and over... Geez.....
