Information / Error messages

Hi there,

Is there a knowledgebase or something somewhere that holds all the informational or error messages that can tell me further details on the message?

ie, while signed into Live messenger, I have an information message that says "due to Connection problems changes you make might not be applied to other computers you use", and all my contacts appear offline, and I can't add new contacts. I've deleted various regenerating dlls and cache.dat files etc and nothing's worked. I've even shutdown my zonelabs firewall. I can talk to people, but can't see their status. I even reactivated my hotmail account for the first time in years, so I could see if my contacts were still attached to my passport, and they are. I can sign in, and use, Xbox Live with my passport fine, I can use MSN 7.5 with NO issues, are there any release bugs for build 8.0.0787.00 that the world needs to know about? I am using MSN behind an http proxy server through port 80, both dictated in the connection settings AND through internet explorer.

I would hate to think that Messenger 8.0 has less functionality than Messenger 7.5. Please tell me how to fix this, OR point me to a knowledge base that explains the "connection problem" I'm apparently experiencing, so I may fix it myself.

UPDATE: I took my laptop home and uninstalled and reinstalled the package and it worked fine, so then I brought it back to work and signed in and it worked fine. The application apparently needs to be installed whilst in an open network, or at least more open than the firewalls at my company allow. Good to keep in mind for anyone else that has this problem.

After using it for a day so far I say, "nice product" :)

Thanks

CaroNZ

I also have this problem and its very annoying as I have tried turning off the windows firewall but with no hope. Im connected to the internet via a router which also has 2 other computer going into it. Any help would also be great.

Thanks

Alio, try the external modem. Connect to internet and Windows Live Messenger then back to the LAN.

It worked for me.

Good Luck

I got a similar problem, I had Messenger 7.5 and after installing Live Messenger 8.0.

After installation, it launched and I got the same "Due to a connection problem, changes you make might not be applied to other computers you use" information message on top of the contact list window. The contact list was empty apart from the message "Your contact list does not have anyone on it. Click the Add button to start creating your list."

I exited messenger (stopped the application) and launched it again, I still got the same information message but this time I had a few of my contacts listed. Further stop/strat did nothing, as well as a restart of the computer.

I then went on another computer with Messenger 7.5 and logged on my account, I also saw only some contacts (same as Messenger 8.0) so I was quite concerned... When I got back to my computer, I had to re-log in my account and , surprise, this time I got much more contacts in my list, but not all of them and still the same information message.

I then found this forum and I connected my computer on a direct line (Wi-Fi network connected directly to the Internet). I logged in Messenger 8.0 and got all my contacts (no more information message). I then switched back to my office network LAN and got the whole list of contact but the information message is back again !!!

When I click on the link of the information message : http://help.live.com/(ZmlsdGVyPURIX0ZSRUUmcHJvamVjdD1tZXNzZW5nZXJ3MTEmbWFya2V0PWVuLVVTJmN1PSZ0bXQ9JmtjPSZmb3JtYXQ9)/Help.aspx?filter=DH_FREE&querytype=keyword&query=gnimaor_stcatnocenilffo&fs=1

I end up in a help that DOES NOT help...

Would be nice to get some kind of fix on that one.

I tried one more thing: I reconnected to the internect through the direct Wi-Fi network and launched the Live Messenger 8.0 installation again. I choose Repair and the installation went on and then required a computer restart (which it did not do on the first installation from the office LAN).

After the restart and connected through the office LAN, Live Messenger 8.0 now gives the complete list of contact and the information message "Due to a connection problem, changes you make might not be applied to other computers you use" is now GONE.

So it appears that Life Messenger really NEEDS to be installed from a direct Internt connection.

Just to add another fun tidbit, I got this problem after changing workstations at work (yesterday/friday, I'm not sure when I installed Live Messenger). However, I'd been using live messenger for several weeks at home without a problem. Now, both encouter this same missing contacts/connection problem error. I'm irritated, to say the least.

Well, we're not alone. Here's 2 good threads:
thread 1

thread 2

My symptoms are as follows:
1. VERY slow login
2. Once connected, Hover Bubble on Task Bar icon says "Connection
Error"
3. In the Live Messenger window the message at the top as information
appears:
"Due to a connection problem, changes you make might not be applied to
other computers you use".

This all started 2 days ago (approx) and now happens on all machines. I use my notebook and it happens both @ work and home.

Check this blog : http://messengersays.spaces.msn.com/PersonalSpace.aspx

So at least Microsoft is working on it and recognize the problem.

Hope to get a fix soon. Would also like to get an explanation on the risk (can we acually loose our contact ? what about the contact we add ? the configuration change ?...)
