Advanced subtitle

Is it possible to add advanced subtitle in existing pre-recorded HD DVD? Thanks.

4.6.1 Alternate subtitle stream
An alternate subtitle stream which has been previously downloaded and cached on the user’s home network is listed on the subtitle menu along with all of the on-disc subtitle streams. When selected the alternate subtitle stream is synchronized to the feature film.
The user can toggle between the cached subtitle stream and the disc based subtitle streams via the remote control without interrupting the video.

Yes, although you will need to download a new playlist, etc. as well in order to reference the new tracks (unless, of course, you build your playlist to pre-emptively include links to file:///required/blah in the hope that one day you will download new content to those URLs, and then your playlist app can conditionally load or hide those tracks from the user).

Note that you can only do this for titles that you own; you can't do it with other people's titles.

I don't know if you are allowed to re-post paragraphs from the specification like that...

Great news! No language barrier anymore with foreign titles, like these Japanese titles:

Sorry for my ignorance. Where can be stored the downloaded or built playlist file ?

Could you remove the re-post paragraphs ? Thanks!

Just to be clear -- when I said "titles you own" I meant titles you *own*, not titles you are licensed to playback in the comfort of your own home :-).

That is, an *end user* cannot choose to download arbitrary playlists / subtitles; only the content author (eg, the Hollywood studio or independent studio that created / published the movie) can create new playlists / subtitles.

We encourage content authors to think about these scenarios when they publish their titles, so that such scenarios are possible in the future.

And to answer your question :-) the subtitles would be stored on the player itself, in an area called "Persistent Storage".

Every HD DVD player must have at least 128MB of non-volatile storage; this could be FLASH memory on a set-top box, or a hard drive on a PC.

Thanks.

I think this feature is very cool. The playlist file can be updated by authors. We can download the updated playlist to an additional persistent storage device, and distribute it to any Player we'd like to.

Is there any precise guide about the data structure files for the subtitles of HD DVD.
I have a .xas file and I'm working on how realize a complete version to create subtitles with all the today's needs (as color for impaired hearing, x position, y position, size, font and all of that can be different for each line of the same subtitle !)
Have you got anything precise about ?
Thanx.

For the advanced subtitles I wish I have more information about who will have the certification to distribute them ?
