How to integrate SQL Server 2005 Express SP1 into VS 2005 setup?

Hello, I would like to know if anyone here has any information on how to change the default version of SQL Server 2005 Express which ships with Visual Studio 2005 to the new SQL 2005 Express SERVICE PACK 1?

I see a file under disc:\vs\wcu\SSE\SQLEXPR.exe I am wondering if changing that file with the new one from Microsoft Download Center will do it...

There's another file under that folder named sqlexpr32.exe I am wondering what it's for?

Thanks in advance.

hi,

I actually never tried, but I do think it's worth trying it out... it shold be ok..

as regard the sqlexpr32.exe, you can have a look at http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143680.aspx ..

it installs on 32 bit OS only, while sqlexpr.exe installs both on 32 and 64 bit OS (WOW64 "enabled", thus excluding itanium cpus)..

I'm not the expert about VS deployment, but as far as I know, disc:\vs\wcu\SSE\SQLEXPR.exe, is not the location where VS pulls the SQL Express installer from. I can't even find this directory on my machine, I can only find it on my image of the VS installer media.

I'm actually working with VS to get thier deployment system updated so that SQL SP1 is offered as a choice but I still don't have a firm answer on where/if this will happen. There is a bit more to it than just replacing a file.

Let me push back to the VS team and see what thier status and schedule on this is before we go down the road of a manual workaround.

Regards,

Mike

Hi Mike, I was reading that VS instalelr actually pulls setup from sqlexpr32.exe when installed on windows xp systems. And this is the file that Microsoft has not released to the public in the new SP1 version.

I'll wait and see what the VS team says about this. Thanks!!!

Sorry for the confusion, with disc I meant the VS installer media :)
