Why can't I post messages or even replies?

Let's say that I compose a reply using the normal edit page (the one with Post, Cancel and Preview buttons). When I'm ready to go, I click Post. That lands me back on the same edit page, with the text of my message intact. Even if I do this several times, I get the same result.

Luckily, I have a couple of other machines (plus a VM or two) nearby, so I was able to discover -- by fluke -- that the problem is limited to this one machine. It turns out that on any other machine, it works as expected. That's how I'm posting this reply

I'm guessing that that narrows our problem search to something cookie-ish...

Did you try deleting the temp files and rebooting the machine?
