Upgrading Workgroup to "Real"
Apologies if this has been asked before, but I looked and didn't find a relevant post.
We installed TFS Workgroup edition to mess with it. At this moment we're on the verge of finally "going live" and adding real projects. We have four users now, soon to be five. Eventually though we know we'll blow the 5-user limit.
Turns out our Partner level (Gold with ISV competancy, etc, etc) gets us a "real" server license. We got a disk but it was bad so we're awaiting a replacement. So I have a couple of specific questions to put my mind at ease:
1) Are we supposed to just install the "Real" version over top of Workgroup? We don't need to blow away everything and start from scratch I hope.
2) In the short term, if we install Real over Workgroup, do the previous five users still automagically exist? In other words, do the original five "free" CALs we have now continue to work without any additional changes?
3) If I want to test while waiting for the disk (which seems to be taking for-freaking-ever), can I install the 180-day trial of "Real" over top of Workgroup now (assuming the above two questions have Yes answers), and merely plug in the license key for "Real" when we get it, rather than having to reinstall *again*? I believe the answer to this one is "Yes", but I want to be sure.
Thanks;
Brad.
Brad,
The following post from Rob Caron should help you:-
http://blogs.msdn.com/robcaron/archive/2006/04/11/573593.aspx
But basically:-
1) The upgrade process is simply a matter of going into Add/Remove programs, selecting TFS and then you enter the full product id in the option at the bottom of the dialog.
2) The existing users should continue just to work, only the 5 user restriction is removed.
3) No. Workgroup to Trial is not supported (see the matrix in the post above).
Hope that helps,
Martin.
One more teensy bit of confusion. Suppose I upgrade my server from Workgroup to Real successfully, and I've obtained a few extra CALs. Exactly where do I associate a CAL with a person?
For example, I know that an installation of Team Edition includes a CAL. And I know that I can merely add this user to one of my project groups (eg. I have a _Development group). But I can't seem to grasp the mechanism to tell TFS "okay, so this user actually has a CAL". Is this an explicit step I need to take somewhere?
Another scenario might be where I want to have a non-Dev person install just Team Explorer to be able to see/make work items. I know that in theory one would purchase a separate CAL. Where would I tell TFS that this CAL belongs to this person?
