Migrating Team Foundation Server workgroup to the full version without a product key

Hi,

We've been using the workgroup edition of TFS since it became available

(using betas and RCs before that). We've now purchased the full

version, and are waiting for media to be delivered. The version that is

on its way apparently doesn't have a product key because we are using

volume licencing. I saw an MSDN article indicating that there was a way

I could get a product key to do an update via the maintenance screen.

Could someone tell me how I go about doing this?

You have to pull out the key from the setup.sdb file on the media.

See Rob's post for more info:-

Thanks for that, looks like exactly what I'll need to do.

I was hoping there might have been a way to get the key from some

details on my purchase order, as the media is apparently 10 days away

due to the ineptitude of our purchasing department, and we really need

to upgrade from 5 users before that. Back to the fallback of

uninstalling workgroup and installing the 180 day trial over the top

until the media arrives, I guess :-(

Just tried this and this also works for upgrading from the Trial Version of Team Foundation Server to the actual Workgroup edition.

The licensing support people at Microsoft should be informed of this because I was just on the phone with them before finding out this thread. they were literally telling me the only way around it was to uninstall everything.

Okay, this is rather worrying, since we're hoping to start our new

developers on this tomorrow. I've just uninstalled the workgroup

edition of team foundation server, the team explorer and team build. I

then installed the 180 day trial, which installed uneventfully, but

when I tried to add new windows accounts to the "Team Foundation

Licenced Users" group I got told there was a limit of 5 users in the

workgroup edition. I'm also unable to add users to the "Valid Users"

group (button disabled).

Am I doing something wrong? If not, any suggestions to get this working?

Thanks,

Kev

Possible false alarm (case of RTFM). I'm now creating my own security

groups and adding users to that - on the face of it it looks to be

working...

You should be ok. The “Licensed Users” group is ignored by TFS Standard

Edition and Trial Edition.

(edit) You're also right that you can't add to "Valid Users" directly. Adding users to any other group automatically makes them valid users.
