Changing Alias to Display Names in RTM

Hi,

Is there any specific reason why this was done? And is there way to change it back to aliases ?

They actually become very long field as display names could be as big as

First name Last Name (Contracting agency's name) for example..

Secondly there is chance that 2 people can have same display name...

Thanks,

Here is the reasoning for the change: http://blogs.msdn.com/buckh/archive/2005/11/28/497561.aspx

"In beta 3 (including refresh) and earlier, work items have always been assigned to user names. For some organizations, that's a real problem, as the user names do not have any relationship to the user's real name. We have fixed this for RTM..."

It would be better if there was a setting option in VSTS to decide which you wanted to use.

Now that we are using Display Names in RTM (which was quite a shocker to us), the width of any report is going to have to be much wider. Using e-mail aliases allows reports to be much narrower and compact. For example:

BugID AssignedTo Title

1234 joeblow This is some very very very very very very very very very long title

Compared to

BugID AssignedTo Title

1234 Joenheimerstein Blowfishmeister (Volt Computer Services) This is some very very very very very very very very very long title

Yes, in our organization we really have someone with a very very long name. It has to be the longest name I have even seen. And for contractors, we identify the contracting agency in parentheses after their display name, which makes the name even longer. This will make our web reports look very ugly if we have to display that much text for the AssignedTo, ResolvedBy and ClosedBy fields.

Also, this change is not going to be inconsistent with our test case manager which uses e-mail aliases to track test case ownership. I really wish there was some way to use e-mail aliases instead.
