Difference between Editing & Checking out through the Project Portal

in the Project Portal, whats the difference between simply editing a document or checking it out and then editing the document?

before in SourceSafe you needed to check out to edit, but now this doesnt seem the case? just a little bit confused on the whole matter!!

also, with in Team System explorer in Visual Studio you only get the option to open a document. so is this checking it out or just allowing you to modify?

Cheers,
Craig

In SharePoint, doing an explicit check-out locks the file for exclusive editing. If a document is not checked-out, and is edited by multiple people, you'll have to merge changes.

In Team Explorer, you'll be able to edit or view a read-only version of the document, with viewing read-only as the default double-click behavior.
