VS2005 Beta 2 & VSS - Slow & Strange

We're experiencing someextremely slow behavior out of VS2005 Beta 2. We have a two person development team, both of us using Beta 2, both of us have beefy machines (~2.5Ghz proc., 1GB). We are both working on the same solution, which contains 6 projects all contained in source control. For one week we've worked without any problem whatsoever and today we started experiencing the problem. The weird thing is, the IDE is non-responsive (i.e. 10-15 seconds before anything shows up after typing, same for menus to appear), but resource usage is close to nil (i.e. processor usage 2-5%, PF usage minimal, memory usage ~50%). Another weird symptom, the first person to open the solution does not witness the phenomenon, it is the second person who opens it that gets the slow IDE. It does not matter which machine.

SourceSafe is on a server, solution/projects are on yet another server.

Any thoughts?

Hi J.

Which SourceSafe plug-in are you using, Visual SourceSafe (for LAN access) or Visual SourceSafe (Internet)? You can check on the Tools | Options | Source Control | Plug-in Selection | Current source control plug-in.

Also when you say "SourceSafe is on a server, solution/projects are on yet another server" do you mean the SourceSafe database is on one server and your working folders with your solution/projects are on another? Or are you using VSS Internet with the web service on one machine and the SourceSafe database on another?

What OS are you using for the servers? You may run into the 10 connection limit if you are using Windows XP for either server. Running "net sessions" on the server when you see the slowdown can show you if you have hitting a share connection limit.

Hi J.,

Is is possible that an antivirus or any other disk-monitoring software was recently installated and is interferring?
If you do run an antivirus (either on the server or the client machines), can you turn it off temporarilly and see if that helps getting rid of the blockages?

Thanks,
Alin
