Vista and SS Management Studio Install Problems
Hi,
I'm running the Vista Beta 2 (x64) and am trying to install SSMS. This is more or less a clean Vista install (had VS Web Express and SQL Server Express installed but those have been uninstalled). The SSMS install comes up ok and I can enter my name and company. It chugs along for a while and then fails. This is what is in the event log:
Product: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express -- The installer has encountered an unexpected error installing this package. This may indicate a problem with this package. The error code is 29506. The arguments are: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Shared\, chue, C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Shared\, chue
I thought maybe I had a bad install file, so I cleared my browser cache and re-downloaded the SSMS install, but the results are the same.
As a side note, I am able to install the db engine (SQL Server Express SP1) without any problems.
Any thoughts on this?

You say your are installing on x64 but the error message mentions x86. Is this a 64-bit version of Vista or just a 64-bit computer with 32-bit Vista on it? Which SSMSE installer are you using? There are separate x86 and x64 installers for SSMSE, make sure you're using the right one.

I'm running the x64 edition of Vista. Also, I'm running the 64 bit edition of the SSMSE installer. (I've actually tried the 32 bit edition of SSMSE as well and the error I get there is "unsupported operating system" or something to that effect, which makes sense).
And I completely agree that the error, which mentions x86, is confusing.

Aaron is the name of my user and administrator. Why is there a double slash before 90?

Is there anyway i can be notified of when the bug is fixed. I am really excited about the new freeware SQL.
Ok i found the solution,
in 4 easy steps! lol
Control Panel > User Account > Change Security Settings
NOTE: Uncheck - Use User Account Control (UAC)
> Reboot ( most reboot )
it will be 5th step if you count the reboot.

Hi,
The information you provided was indeed very useful and I was able to install SS Management Studio, however, an error pops when I tried to click open SS Management Studio from Start --> Run --> Programs.
The error message is that -- "The proper type library could not be found in the system registry. An Attempt to repair this condition failed beacuse you do not have the permissions to write to the system registry or because the type library could not be loaded"
Can you please help me in fixing this issue.
