SP1 Database Services failed to install
Database services upgrade installation keeps failing when I try to install SP1 on a SQL 2005 Developer edition.

We have a few similar postings to this in the forum. Can you give this a shot to see if it is the same issue?
SP1 fails with "Unable to install Windows Installer MSP file" for "Setup Support Files"
Workaround:
1/ Save the registry contents of:
KeyName: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Bootstrap\MSIRefCount
Value: Uninstall
2/ Uninstall SqlSupport.msi from Add/Remove control panel
3/ Install SqlSupport.msi version 1399 from the RTM media.
4/ Restore the registry contents that were saved in step 1.

We are having the same problem mentioned above, except it is installing SP1 on SQL Server 2005 (Not the developer edition).
The fix mentioned regarding reinstalling the SQLSupport.msi seems to only work when the "Setup Support Files" install fails.
The original post as well as myself, seem to be experiencing the same thing which is that the actual Database Services update is failing. "Setup Support Files" is installing fine.
Any other ideas?

I'm having this problem as well, and the indicated solution didn't seem to help. I'm installing SQL2K5 SP1 on an existing SQL2K5 Developer Edition installation, which is installed on a Thinkpad T41 running XP2SP2.
I received the "svrenumapi.dll" open message when the upgrade got to the Database Server portion of the upgrade. I opened SQL Configuration Manager -- all of the SQL2K5 services were shutdown. I closed SQL Configuration Manager, then hit "Try Again", with the same results. I could not identify what had that DLL open.
I went through the steps above, or at least some semblance of them. The steps didn't indicate where the upgrade should happen, so I did them in this order:
1. I exported the indicated registry entry.
2. I uninstalled "Microsoft SQL Server Setup Support Files (English" -- there was no entry named "SQLSupport.msi".
3. I ran the upgrade. It indicated failure on several of the sections, beginning with Database Server.
So, I tried again.
4. I re-installed the SqlSupport.msi from the Developer Edition CD.
5. I re-ran the upgrade. It gave the locked file message on svrenumapi.dll again. I hit Continue.
6. It gave a Failure on the Database server, but success on everything else.
7. I rebooted the PC.
8. The SQL Server service was started automatically at reboot, and a "select @@version" shows 9.00.2047.0.
So, first, do I tell if I have a problem with my installation or not? If there is a problem, how do I fix it?
Second, is there any more information on the error?

I am having the same problem on developer edition. Only the database services fail to install.
I found that after the inital discory of the database service, stopping all services using the sql manager made it posible to install over all locked files.
Hi guys, the logs posted are the summary logs, not the database specific log. Can you post that log to help debug? It should be located at %windir%\WINDOWS\Hotfix\SQL9\Logs\SQL9_Hotfix_KB913090_sqlrun_sql.msp.log

Hi guys.
I was having the exact same problem on an 2005 x64 Enterprise SP1 upgrade (named instance) and it was driving me nuts. After following all the troubleshooting on here to no avail I realized that the upgrade was failing to start the database, and then making it impossible for me to start it as well. Replacing the mssqlsystemresource database with a backed up copy would fix it and allow me to start the server.
I finally noticed that this was because the installer was dumping the mssqlsystemresource.ldf file into the same dir as the mdf even though I have these files on different volumes on my SAN. A simple copy of the new (10-04-2006) ldf over to the proper location before running the installer again resulted in a successful install of the Database Services.
I don't know if this is a bug in the installer, or just something that I ran into but either way that was my fix- take a look at what's going on with your install and see if you have a similiar issue.

I had the same issue with Enterprise Edition on a W2k3 server. The SP1 installation complained that C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Shared\svrenumapi.dll was locked. I made sure all the SQL Server services and tools were shut down and renamed the file svrenumapi.dl. I hit retry and it took off. Little simpler than monkeying with the registry or something.
Also, there's a free utility from Sysinternals called FileMon which will show you which processes have which files open. In this case, nothing really did.

I had a similar problem with the SP1 upgrade failing on the Database Service. As it turns out Backup Exec Intelligent Disaster Recovery software created a file named master$4IDR and several others *$4IDR in the C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Data directory which only the service account for our backups had access to. Once I added permissions for the SYSTEM and our SQL service account to those files the upgrade went fine.
Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Data *$4IDR files were using the Backup Exec account and the local SQL Server Administrator Account did not have permissions to those files. I added permissions and it worked like a champ.
Hi guys, the failure for Database Services typically results in this error:
Error 29506. SQL Server Setup failed to modify security permissions on file E:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Data\ for user administrator.
The problem is that there exists a file in this Data directory that the user running SP1 does not have permissions to modify. The workaround is to figure out which file this is (typically a user created DB or some backup program files) and to temporarily assign permission to that file(s). You can revert back to the intended permissions after running SP1. Looks like this has been discovered by a few folks.
