Super Slow Indexing

Hey everyone. My name is Scott, and this is my first visit to ths msdn forums so howdy all. My issue is with three processes that, I believe, are acting in a way that they shouldn't be. Here they are:

SearchFIlterHost.exe
SearchIndexer.exe
SearchProtocolHost.exe

I looked them up and I believe theyare Windows Desktop Seach. Basically what happens is whenever I try to explore any directory (whether its the root of C:\ or some deep subdirectory) on any drive (even the control panel), it takes about 10-15 seconds to display all the files/folders that should appear relatively instantly. The little green progress bar moves across my navigation bar, and then it works.

I discovered that windows desktop search makes periodic updates the the Index, but that these only last a few seconds. This happens literally every time I try to browse my file system, and these three processes are always running. I ended them via Task Manager, but then the browsing just took longer as it initialized these processes again.

There is obviously something telling Vista (Build 5384 by the way) that it needs to do this, and I bet (knowing me) that it is very obvious and simple. Any help would be great.

Thanks you guys,

Scott

Hey its me again. I fixed it. To anyone experiencing the same thing (or maybe similar) this is all I did:

- Disabled indexing on my two partitions (C: and D:) by going to the properties of both and unchecking the box. <this takes forever and a day>
- Stopped the Indexing Service by going into Administrative Tools>Services and finding Windows Seach. Then I stopped it and disabled it from starting when my PC does.

Then I rebooted and it was magically healed. I apologize for taking your guys' time, but I didn't know where you went to perform either of these functions but its ok now. Thanks again,

Scott

Thank you Scott for this information. The same happened with my PC after installing MS Office 2007 bêta 2.

After applying your "instructions" the problem was solved.

Are you using iTunes? iTunes stores temp files as XML and we will constantly index them. Try and disabling the .XML file extension from being indexed in the Indexing Options control panel.

It would be nice to selectively disable individual files so that indexing of all XML files BUT this one occurs.

Sounds like a great SP1 feature!!!
