How do you get the Desktop Search Bar to show?

I am trying to figure out how to work this thing. I can not figure how to get the Desktop Search Bar to show on start bar. Can anyone give me some insight as to where I can get a Getting Started paper for this thing or tell me how this works?

Thanks

I'm having exactly the same problem, doesn't seem to be any info anywhere. I've installed and reinstalled, tried to open WDS manually from C drive. Nothing. WDS does not show on the taskbar or anywhere on the computer, aside from an installed program. There's no indexing going on, nothing. It just doesn't work, and isn't there.

Hello All,

Could you please let me know which version of WDS you are using? The 3.0 beta preview does not display in the taskbar as there currently isn't a user interface available.

If you are using 2.6.x I should be able to help you out.

I was using the version you mentioned - the latest full version. It didn't work so I installed v.3 beta to see if that would, and it didn't. I can easily uninstall v.3 and reinstall the latest full version in order to apply any fix you might have.

Same problem here. It was showing fine, then I installed Office 12 Beta, and now nothing is showing. An upgrade clearly happened, as trying to reinstall from the msn desktop search location reports that I have a newer version installed on my PC. Trying to uninstall WDS results in a warning that Office 12 Meeting Console may no longer work.

Is there a mechanism to get the UI front end to the new WDS? (and shouldn't this sort of "upgrade" that regresses functionality be made with the consent of the user?)

If you are running 3.0 there currently isn't a way to display the deskbar. The 3.0 beta preview does not currently have a user interface of any kind (outside the instant search bar in Outlook).

You have two options here:

1. Uninstall WDS 3.0 (it shouldn't cause any issues) and install WDS 2.6.5. 2.6.5 will work just fine with Office 12, but you'll lose the nifty "instant search" feature embedded within Outlook. If you choose this option make sure you say "No" to the Outlook start-up prompt that asks if you would like to enable instant search. Enabling instant search is what installs WDS 3.0.

2. You can wait a little bit and install the next 3.0 beta which is due out in the not very distant future (that's all the info I can give). The release will have a user interface.

As for the seemingly "covert" installation of 3.0, we weren't happy about it either. A number of customers installed the 3.0 beta preview without any sort of clear indication that they would lose the WDS UI. In the future, we'll make an effort to ensure this doesn't happen.

Paul,

Thanks for the post. I have been working on this WDS problem for several weeks and have pulled all my hair out. When I first installed Office 2007 the WDS worked great. It was like the search on my Mobile Media Phone. Then it stopped. No seach at all in Outlook.

I have looked in my "Add and Remove Programs" and I can not find WDS 3.0. I know it is installed because I tried to down load 2.6.5 and it said I had a later verson already installed. How do I remove WDS 3.0?

I would appreciate any help on this subject.

Thanks,
