Vista 5308 Media Center Extender issues
Does anyone know if the extender function in the Media Center module of the February CTP is compatible with the Xbox Media Center Extender (MCX)? I have been attempting to set this up on my test system, and will get as far as the programming the device stage of the extender setup, but at this point the setup will sit there for over an hour without completing. Is there an update that will need to be obtained to allow this to function, or is this feature only compatible with devices such as the Xbox 360 at this time?

I have an Xbox 360 and I get the exact same thing that happens to you. It will automatically detect there is an Xbox 360 Extender device on my network but during "Device Configuration" it stalls out. It is not a hang but the wizard just stops.
I have the same issuse, both via wifi link and wired link... it seems to auto find the 360 find but hangs at the programming of the device stage...
The 360 hasn't been programmed to use vistas MCE, it only allows MCE2005. if you goto
http://www.xbox.com/pcsetup you'll see the full error message.
That's great to know, and the feedback is appreciated, but it doesn't answer the initial question, which is if there is an update available, (preferably via DVD release, as I have an original Xbox, and don't have a Xbox live account, nor am I willing to purchase one,) that will allow us to test the functionality of this feature. Any response from the Vista development team about this would be appreciated, as this is one of the big features that will need to be tested before vista is released.

I to suffer from this and will be keeping a watchful eye on this subject.
can you run the extender as an administrator?
i was running as the local administrator when i ran media center to add the extender..... and this does not solve the issuse

I filed a bug report and had it responded to and said this functionality isn't working in the current build and to check the FAQ. So I guess no extender at the moment.
You actually don't need the Media Center Extender to get it working. Vista 5308 has all the functionality you need built right into it by default. In Windows Media Player 11, you go to Library and then Library Sharing and you have the option of sharing your library with other devices. Once this has been enabled, search from your XBOX 360 for computers under Music or Pictures and it will detect it automatically. The XBOX 360 is 100% recognized and will even show up as XBOX 360 with its logo and the properties same way it does under XP or MCE2005. Once you add files to your shared library, you can access and play them from XBOX 360. The Media Center application on Vista 5308 also works just the same as MCE2005 with the XBOX 360. I hope this is what you were looking for. Works flawlessly for me :)
Excellent news Mimzo, but I currently have the 5342 build, and xbox360 seams to have a problem with the software? Problem is: I can't connect through the Media Center option on the 360. Can't configure extender device's settings @ my pc, but simple music sharing works fine.
Thanks anyone with remarks.
I was looking to get the original xbox extender working. Have not go round to purchasing a 360 - I will need permission sanctioned from she who must be obeyed
Where did you get 5342 from?
Here ya go.
I have two xbox 360's (if you think that is funny ask how many tv's or xboxs i have). Niether one will work and both have issues connecting.
Both have been updated and one was even born one 03-03-2006.
I go to the 360 and navigate to the media center. I get the message about security and I write the code down. I then press continue. Which ask me to go to the web site download some softwrae and during setup enter the code.
I go back to Vista Media Center navigate to tools | externders | select the 360 | select configure | hit next | answer no or yes | next | and then it hangs on device configuration.
I can do it on either one. I have almost go to the point of doing wired/wireless but heard that was not the problem in previous post.
My last attempt funny as it sounds is to bypass the network with a twisted network cable or a standard hub. Are there issues with a swtiched hubs (linksys befw11s4)?
