no e-mails are indexed
just installed latest version of windows desktop search on my home computer. I use it at work and think it is great. However at home no e-mails are indexed it does not seem to recognise that I have outlook installed. I have outlook 2003, windows xp, service pack 2 and latest updates.
Any help would be appreciated as i would really like to be able to use this at home too.
thanks

Hello gra67,
There are a few steps that you can take here.
1. Click on the WDS icon in the system tray (magnifying glass) and select Desktop Search Options. Once there, select Indexing in the system tray and select Custom folders and email locations and click browse. Does WDS recognize that you have Outlook installed? If so, you should see your email profile listed and selectable. Make sure that the email profile is selected. If the profile is not selectable skip to step 2.
2.
3. If neither of the the above work for you make sure that the Outlook Toolbar add-in is not disabled. In Outlook click Help: About Microsoft Office Outlook. Once there, select Disabled items. If Outlook Toolbar add-in appears click on it and select Enable. Then close and restart Outlook.
It says Outlook - Not installed on your computer
What is step 2?
Sorry gra67 - step two is coming in a minute. I've had to restart my computer a few times due to mandatory system updates. I'll be back after a reboot :-)

hi,
there is nothing showing as disabled.
In the e-mail locations outlook express shows as an e-mail client even though I don't have outlook express installed?
I looked in the registry and found reference to outlook express and i wondered if this had anything to do with the problem?
gra67,
I'm back. Give the following a try.
In IE go to Tools:Internet Options: Programs and make sure Microsoft Office Outlook is set as your email client.
If your email account is on Exchange you will also want to make sure that Outlook is running in cached mode. To do this go to Outlook and select Tools:Options:Mail Setup. Select Email Accounts and then View or change existing email accounts. Select your email account and click Change and make sure Use Cached Exchange Mode is selected.

hi,
I checked my internet explorer settings and outlook is my e-mail client.
I am not on exchange.
I really hope we can find a solution to this, i have tried all the other search engines and this one is definitley the best. It's really annoying to have it working on work computers but then unable to use it on my home computer.
any other suggestions as to how i can fix this?
Hmm...Sometimes this situation can pop up if you have an old registry key laying around (it was installed by MSN Explorer). You can fix this situation by doing the following:
Right click on the Start button and select Properties
On the Start Menu tab, click Customize
On "Show on Start menu" check the Email box and select "Microsoft Office Outlook" as the default.
Once the above is done I would suggest restarting your computer.

hi,
i tried this and still no luck.
I also tried uninstalling and reinstalling destop search again but it still is not working. When installing at the initial stage it says msn desktop search requires outlook if you wish to continue without the outlook features please continue.
Don't know if this helps identifying why it doesn't think i don't have outlook.
Does anyone else have any other ideas? I've uninstalled/reinstalled WDS (w/out the tooldbar, because it won't let me install the toolbar because I don't "have" outlook installed) too many times to count. I've reinstalled Outlook 2003 twice & still nothing. The box next to Outlook 2003 is grayed out because "it's not installed". HELP! I have exactly the same problem. It was working fine. I upgraded to version 1.6.5 and then, yeah, it suggests I dont have Outlook installed at all.. Talk about gay.
Any help would be appreciated.
okay i fixed it... you've installed some sort of enterprise version (funny thing is I work at an enterprise)... anyway, uninstall it, and install the msn toolbar..this includes the windows search thing... search for the msn toolbar...it should be around 8-9 mb... the upgrade (which Ill never do again) was only like 4mb.
that worked for me...
hope it worked for you....
thanks for the information but that didn't work for me. It shows as outlook express installed and that outlook is not installed :(
I too have found that my mails are not being indexed. I have installed all the updates for my XP SP2.
I am using Outlook 2007 Beta and my file is showing in the settings for Windows search. When I search either within Outlook or desktop it comes back with no results
