WDS closes

I'm not a developer, but couldn't find another forum to post a question.

here's what happens:

  1. I type in search words in the WDS deskbar search box.
  2. A list of choices appear
  3. I click on a file or on "more"
  4. WDS application opens
  5. Then immediately closes.

I have completely uninstalled and re-installed 2 times, following all the instructions I could find on this forum.

Here are a few of my "specs":

Windows Deskbar Search--02.06.5000.5378

XP Pro 2002 SP2

IE V6

Hello Seprice,

From the information given, there are a few potential issues.

1. Do you have any anti-virus or anti-spyware programs on your PC? If you do, I would check these to make sure that they are not blocking WDS in some way.

2. Have you ever had an older version of WDS (or the MSN deskbar) on your computer? If so, this could be the problem. WDS 2.6.5 does not install well over WDS versions 2.5 or earlier. You may need to go into add/remove programs and uninstall 2.6.5 and 2.5 and then reinstall 2.6.5 by itself.

3. Are you using the multilanguage user interface (MUI) pack? If so, the MUI pack version needs to match the version of WDS that you are using. If the two don't match, you can run into silent failures like the one you are seeing.

Please try the three above and, if they don't work, it would be helpful if you could provide me with the following information:

Has WDS ever worked for you before? If so, what has changed since it last worked for you?

I couldn't see where anything was blocking WDS. I do have Symantec Anti-Virus and a CyberArmor firewall (all corporate stuff). I added all the WDS files and folders to the "exclude" list for symantec real-time file protection. I deleted a spyware blocker that was old (spystopper).

I downloaded WDS last week and had several weird cidaemon errors. I changed the DEP settings back and forth and it went away. But then started having these problems.

I've only tried using WDS a couple of times, but I think it may have worked the first time, but not since...and certainly not with this latest download. (I did uninstall via add/remove and rebooted before installing today.)

I'm not using MUI.

Nothing has helped.

update. I restarted my laptop using diagnostic startup and made sure everything spy and virus-related was shut down. I got the same exact issue.

Also, I'm using Outlook 2003, if that makes a difference.

Seprice,

I'm sending this over to some people on our test team to see if they can help troubleshoot the issue. I hope to be back to you soon.

Seprice,

We've not been able to reproduce this problem in our environment. Is there any chance that I could remotely connect to your computer to try to identify the problem? If yes, please send me an email a-paulny@microsoft.com and I'll set up an appointment with you.

i replied to your e-mail but haven't heard next steps.

in addition, i've tried using WDS in safe mode and in diagnostic mode....and have removed almost all of my spyware/antivirus stuff (plus re-started with all start-up processes turned off).

Still having the same issue.

Is there some system log I could send you? Or perhaps uninstall again, and delete everything associated out of the registry?

Suellen,

My apologies - I have been absolutely swamped lately. Unfortunately, I don't think there are any logs that will clearly point out where the problem lies.

You mention that Desktop Search shuts down after the following operation: Enter search term in the deskbar and then click on "more" to see additional results inside the WDS UI.

Are you able to open the WDS UI at all? Try pressing the Windows Key + F

Please also try going to Start:Programs:Windows Desktop Search

Does the UI work in either of these instances? If so, the problem probably lies with the deskbar. If not, then the problem is likely with WDS. This information will help me figure out where we should go from here.

Thanks,

I just re-installed WDS again....this time while in "diagnostic mode" to disable everything. Here are my responses:

You mention that Desktop Search shuts down after the following operation: Enter search term in the deskbar and then click on "more" to see additional results inside the WDS UI.

Are you able to open the WDS UI at all? YES Try pressing the Windows Key + F

Please also try going to Start:Programs:Windows Desktop Search

Does the UI work in either of these instances? YES...in both cases WDS opens and displays some results...then as it appears the preview is loading, the app shuts down....in both instances. Thus, I guess it is not the deskbar but with WDS.

OK. this has become a challenge....

Last night, I searched my registry and deleted every single thing that had "windows desktop search" and "msn toolbar" in it. (I know...not smart to do so, but figured I was somewhat save.

I downloaded both again and installed in diagnostic mode.

Same issues.

But, I played around and found a clue: the WDS app shuts down during the "preview" operation. If I turn off the "preview" window, the app works and gives me a list of results.

Any ideas about fixing the preview? I could live without it, but thought that was an interesting development.

Check what filetype is cauing the close-down of WDS - it may be a misbehaving iFilter.

Over many weeks, I have had a problem with 2.6.5 when preview is on, and the file that is being previewed is PDF. I have Acrobat 7 viewer installed, but I'm not sure which iFilter for PDF is being used (rthere's a free utility somewhere, for showing what iFilters are installed - but I can't find it, becuase I installed WDS 3.0 Beta2 and it seems all my indexes are being re-created). Incidentally, when the crash occurs, AFAIK it's reported to Microsoft via an error dialogue.

As I recall, the Adobe iFilter v7 or v6 gives problems. I'm not sure what the work-around is.

But it may not be PDF files that are causing your problem.
