I have received the same error(0x80072f8f) while I was trying to update Windows defender. Then I saw this article:
http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/showarticle.aspx?articleid=12&ln=en&IsMu=True
And now there is no problem.
If your using a proxy user the windows key manager (start -> run -> "rundll32.exe keymgr.dll, KRShowKeyMgr") to add your proxy credentials manually. This worked great for me.
