If you have trouble installing the Windows SDK...

If you run into problems installing the SDK, there are a few common culprits. Click theLog button on the "Install Complete" screen and open the log. Or browse to your %temp% folder and open sdksetup.txt. Scroll all the way to the bottom, because that's where the error will appear.

One frequent problem is with Microsoft Document Explorer 2005in the log. For instance:
10:45:37 AM Tuesday, January 24, 2006: [SDKSetup:Info] Config_Products_Install: End installation of product: Microsoft Document Explorer 2005
This is a fix we're actively working. For now it has an easy workaround: Go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall Microsoft Document Explorer 2005. Then relaunch setup.

Similarly, if the log includes Debugging Tools for Windows or Microsoft .NET Compact Framework 2.0, uninstall those apps and install the SDK. In both cases, the SDK will reinstall those files for you. In the case of the Framework, that issue should also be resolved in the February CTP.

The final error is due to a problem with the downloaded ISO.10:00:04 AM Wednesday, January 25, 2006: [SDKSetup:Error] Config_Products_Install: Windows SDK Setup (failed): Installation of the "Microsoft Windows Software Development Kit" product has reported the following error: Fatal error during installation.
This is due to a problem with the ISO that was downloaded. Delete the ISO you have and re-download it. For the users who reported these problems, that solved it.

Thanks!

Finally I gave up, cant' tell you how angry I am, I need the workflow beta2 sdk.

Can you at least tell me when the feb ctp will go public?

Can you please email me off-list about your problems? I want to find out what your unique case is, so we can avoid the problems in the future. If you can send along a log, that would be even better. As the setup PM for the SDK, I really care a lot about user-reported errors. We're working hard to remove all possible errors for the SDK, and that really is my top priority.

The Feb CTP will be live in about three weeks.

Jason,

I had this error and another ISO was not the problem in my case. The installer didn't indicate that my HD was out of space (shame on me for not noticing).

Anyway, thought I would mention that i discovered this by running the msi via command line and using verbose logging which displayed the proper error in the log.

E:\Setup>msiexec /package WinSDK-x86.msi /quiet /lv c:\out.log

Hope this helps someone else.

Excellent piece of advice. This was the same issue on my machine as well. There should definite be a disk space check in the installer!

Jason,

I had the same problem when trying to install Visual Studio 2005 Extensions for Windows Workflow Foundation RC5(EN).exe.

I resolved it by doing 2 things (I'm not sure which one did the trick).

1. Running all the x86 MSI's from the windows SDK. (this may have not done anything).

2. Copied the Visual Studio 2005 Extensions for Windows Workflow Foundation RC5(EN).exe to a seperate folder and ran it from there. It had resided before in the same download folder as The SDK installer was, and every time I ran it from there it invoked the SDK setup.exe which gave me options to fix the installation but no workflow related options.

After copying and running from a seperate location the correct installer loaded and I was able to install the WWF.
