History removal

Can anyone tell me how to manually remove search history?

For that matter, how about manual removal of RUN history, and ADDRESS history?

My machines are overloaded with histories that get in the way of my admin.

Hi Matt,

The easiest way to remove the Desktop Search history from a machine is to do the following:

  1. Click in the search window on the deskbar
  2. Click the Windows flag in the bottom left corner of the screen
  3. Select “Clear search history”

It should also be noted that you can turn off the saving of search history. To do this:

  1. Click in the search window on the deskbar
  2. Click the Windows flag in the bottom left corner of the screen
  3. Select “Deskbar Options”
  4. Select “Deskbar” in the navigation pane on the left of the screen
  5. Uncheck “Save search history”

Doing this will keep you from having to continually delete search histories.

As for your questions about deleting Address and Run history, you can find those answers here:

Address history

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/157729/en-us

Run history

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307875/en-us

**Note** following the instructions for clearing your run history will also clear your “My recent documents” history.

The directions seem simple enough, except I'm not sure where to find the "search window on the deskbar". I'm thinking the search window button is at the top of the page of internet explorer but when I still do not find the "windows flag in the bottom left corner of the screen." Need help locating this.

Thanks.... Russ Park

Robert,

My apologies, if you are using Windows ME you are probably using Search Companion (the standard Windows search mechanism) - not Windows Desktop Search (WDS). WDS is a separate product that can be added to Windows via download from the Microsoft download center.

It sounds like you would like to delete Search Companion. Unfortunately, I'm unable to answer your question. You might try asking this question in a Windows forum. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
