MS Office document and image writer print driver

Besides removing this feature from Office during setup, is there a process to remove this virtual printer from 300 users with roaming profiles on an active directory network? We are having an issue with this printer assuming the "default printer" selection for our users. As a work around we have changed their default printer, but after they reboot or log off / on it has defaulted back to the MS Ofc doc and image writer printer.

Per our support engineer:

Thanks for using ISV Community Forum, according to your problem, I’m wondering whether you can simply log on the machine as administrator and delete the virtual printer (just select the icon and press del key) in Control Panel -> Printers and Faxes, after the deletion, the virtual printer will no longer appears in each user’s profile. Of course, since you’ve already installed feature, you can easily recover the virtual printer without reinstallation.

Hello,

I have the opposite problem. I have users who have had the icon for the Office Document Image Writer deleted under Printers and Faxes. You mention above that it is easy to reinstall the virtual printer. Could you point me to the directions for reinstallation please?

Thanks for your help.

1. Go to Control panel – Printer and fax
2. Add Printer – select local printer attached then manual
3. In the port option select Document image printer writer port
4. Install a generic text only printer.
5. Right-click on the generic text/only printer driver and select properties.
6. Click on ports and select "Microsoft office document imaging driver port"
7. Click on the advanced tab and change the driver to Microsoft office document image writer
8. Click on apply and OK

A little bit different problem here. I was using this Microsoft Document Imaging Writer port (virtual printer) for quite some time to print what ever screen/file into a image file (mdi/tif format). This virtual printer was missing from the printer folder without I noticed it.

I followed the instructions posted in this discussion to add back the virtual printer by selecting the "Generic / text only", change in printer property to select "Microsoft Document Imaging Writer port". I added the virtual printer successfully.

But, I was not able to print out a mdi format file. It only able to print out a tif format file. I tried to change in property->Advance tab, change output format from tif format to mdi format. After i click print, nothing come out.

FYI. If select output tif format, it is working fine output a tif file like what i experienced before.

Please advice.

OK, this installed the Office document image writer but users are reporting that when they send files to it, they don't know where to find them. Please advise. Thanks.

This procedure adds the printer icon in "Printers and Faxes" but you can not send a document there. Even though you are prompted for a place to save the .mdi, one does not get saved. The proper way to reinstall the MS Office document and image writer is:

1. Delete the icon if you created one under Printers and Faxes

2. Go to Control Panel Add or Remove Programs

3. Click on MS Office and select Change

4. Select Detect and repair errors in my Office installation.

5. Click on Install

When the repair has been made the Office document and image writer will appear under Printers and Faxes. Print a test page and you will get a preview of the page before it is sent. You will need an ID with Admin rights to perform these changes.
