Crash with Different Bucket ID: 291424876.
Thought I'd start a new thread, since I'm using Visual C# Express, rather than full VS2005.
Windows XP Pro SP2, Visual Studio 2003 Pro, SQL Server 2000 Developer Edition, Visual C# Express, Visual Web Developer Express, SQL Express 2005, MSDE. I also have Virtual Server 2005 SP1 beta installed.
Problem just started this weekend. Whenever I click on any topic in the Index, Document Explorer crashes.
I've tried Repair on Visual C# Express, Visual Web Developer Express and MSDN 2005 Express. Same problem. It was working fine last week, I'm not sure what's changed.
I have previously had VS2005 beta2 installed, but I removed that by following the instructions before installing the Express Editions -- and, as I said, they were working fine last week anyway.
I've clicked the 'Send Error Report' button several times. The reports in Event Viewer all look the same (before and after the repair):
Bucket 240955232, bucket table 1, faulting application dexplore.exe, version 8.0.50727.42, stamp 4333d0b3, faulting module msenv.dll, version 8.0.50727.42, stamp 4333e919, debug? 0, fault address 0x0045d654.Any suggestions for how I might fix this? I'mthis close to re-installing Windows, but I'd rather not do that just yet.
Couple of things to try out here.
(i) After launching Document Explorer (Help->Index in your Express Product), launch Web Browser (View->Web Browser->Web Browser).
(ii) Click on Index and see if the crash occurs.
Also, try setting Help to Internal Help Viewer in Tools->Options->Help->General, and see if the crash occurs.
Please do upload crash dumps again if it happens. The more data helps in tracking down the issue.

PS: - Anything new installed on the machine, like a Windows/Antivirus Update?
(i) Crashes immediately I choose that final menu option.
(ii) Do you mean the Index button on the toolbar? Doesn't crash -- brings up the index, but clicking on anything in it crashes it.
I can navigate around in the contents, but as soon as I click something that would bring up content, it crashes.
The 'Show Help Using' option is greyed out. Because I'm using an Express product?
Choosing to use 'Local help only' -- it still crashes.
The crash dumps are still uploading. I'll attach the details from Event Viewer later.
The only thing I can think that I might have installed since it last worked is Virtual Server. I'll try uninstalling that later and see if that fixes it.
To enable internal Help Viewer, go to the Tools->Options in the C# Express (not in Document Explorer). After Setting Help to internal, try launching Help->Index in C# Express and see if it crashes.

OK, I couldn't find that option before -- I didn't realise that you need to check 'Show all settings' at the bottom of the Options dialog box.
If I do this, then go to Index, it brings up the index correctly, but clicking on any item in the list causes Visual C# to crash:
Bucket 250330414, bucket table 1, faulting application vcsexpress.exe, version 8.0.50727.42, stamp 4333d0bd, faulting module msenv.dll, version 8.0.50727.42, stamp 4333e919, debug? 0, fault address 0x0045d654.
Hi,
I looked at the Watson report associated with this crash. It seems that we are unable to created Web Browser control. Is Help working in VS 2003 for you?

Unfortunately, I'm just in the process of rebuilding my PC, so I can't say definitively, but I think that help was working fine in VS2003.
Fortunately, I'm rebuilding onto a new disk. If I get time this weekend, I'll put the old disk back in and try it again.
Hopefully, it will work correctly on your new configuration. If you do get a chance to put the old disk back, I would also like you to try one more.
(i) Set help to use Document Explorer in VC# Express.
(ii) Close and restart VS and bring up Document Explorer through Help->Index.
(iii) In Document Explorer, bring up the Help->About box.
If it doesn't crash, can you verify whether there is a logo (a bitmap) on the left hand side, and some text in the the description box?

Hello
Also having what appears to be the same problem myself.
Get the following error message-
'Microsoft Document Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close'
Tried repairing C# to no avail, so uninstalled and re-installed this fixed the problem, but only for it to return next day.
Have checked the Help->about box, and in my case there is a logo and text.
Any additional help/suggestions would be very much appreciated.
Thanks
Dave A.
Hi
Visual Studio 2005 - Professional.
I am also having exactly the same issue. It seemed to start after it processed updates (help updates I assume).
If I leave the index unfiltered, it does not crash. As soon as I select a filter (i.e. C#) it crashes.
Many of the topics seem to have no entires associated with them even though they should have.
It makes no difference as to if I use online help or local help.
I have sent the error reports.
Thanks
S.
I am experiencing a similar issue. I cannot launch the MSDN Library for Visual Studio 2005 at all.
The Document Explorer application always crashes regardless if I attempt to launch from within the IDE or from one of the Start Menu program groups (e.g. Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 -> Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Documentation).
I have repaired the library a number of times and attempted to install both from a downloaded image from MSDN subscriptions and also the DVD that I was sent from MSDN in the mail. No success at stopping the crashes.
Additionally, I have resintalled the entire Visual Studio 2005 product (e.g. Framework 2.0, Visual Studio, SQL Express, etc.) serveral times but the result is always the same.
I do have previous versions of Visual Studio and MSDN libraries installed and they work just fine. I should note that I never installed any of the 2005 beta versions.
Any suggestions for me?
Todd
Same problem also for me.
Tried to reinstall but the problem still occur.
Omar
I'm also having this problem. Tried installing/reinstalling/fixing in a number of different configurations.
I was able to get MSDN Library to install and work fine by itself without visual studio 2005 Pro installed. but once I install VS2005 it breaks. Its driving me nuts because without the help makes the IDE pretty much useless. Is there any fix or idea of where to start working on this issue?
Please upload the crash report to Microsoft and let us know the crash id (available in Event log) for it. This way, we can look into the cause of the crash.
