Problem Purging mailbox from within Exchange 2003

We are having an issue trying to purge a few left over mailboxes from a recovery effort.

What we have noticed is as follows:
-the account that the mailbox was tied to no longer exsists.
-when you try to either reconnect or purge the mailbox I get the following error.
"The operation cannot be performed because this mailbox was already reconnected to an existing user." ID no. c1034ad6"

We need a way to either reconnect this mailbox to a new account or purge it off the system. I can provide more information if needed...

Thanks,
Sean

Sean;

Did you ever resolve this problem? I too have recovered an Exchange database to a recovery server and am unable to reconnect a mailbox to a temporary profile - setup solely for the purpose of recovering messages.

Thanks;
Steve

This is a problem with mail user information in AD in relation with Exchange.

You can refer to the following article to have an idea of what is going on:

You need to install sp2 for exchange 2003 and use mailbox recover center after this to reconnect or else it should perge also withour any issue.

Hi,

did you solve the problem, if you did, how did you do it.

Normaly the flow is somethinglike this.

Exchange Tasks: Delete Mailboxes in "users and computers"

Exchange Tasks: Remove Exchange attibutes (to remove all links from the mailbox)

Exchange System Manager: Run Cleanup agent

Exchange System Manager: Purge Mailbox

"users and computers": Delete Users

In this way the problem doesn't occur

I have spent hours also trying to resolve this problem with no luck.

In the end I simply deleted the mailbox store, as we had no need for it anymore, and this also deleted the problem mailboxes.

To resolve this same problem I:
a. Ran 'Exchange Tasks' on the known user account from the old mailbox causing me the "this mailbox was already reconnected to an existing user" error and selected the 'Remove Exchange Attributes'.
b. Ran Cleanup Agent on the maibox store.
c. This allowed me to purge (or reconnect) the offending mailbox.
d. I then had to reconnect the desired mailbox agin to the user account
