This may not be a very appropriate question for this forum..anyways...
In my opinion - the answer is Yes. Make sure you go for a x64 processor either from Intel or AMD. I am myself running a AMD Athlon64 3200+ and all the 32-bit applications also run fine with no issues.

I recently purchased an HP with an Athlon 64-bit CPU, and all apps work well EXCEPT for any .NET Framework 1.1 apps. If you plan to do any development work, you probably will not be able to run .NET 1.1 on the machine, unless you use WoW emulation. From what I understand, WoW exacts a large penalty in overhead, and may not be a very good option. .NET 2.0 may be the way to go, but as other posters in this forum have stated, that route has some pitfalls as well.

TaddeR:
The information you have mentioned is incorrect. There is no problem with running any .NET Framework v1.1 applications. Of course it would use the WOW emulation if you installed 64-bit Windows but the x64 processor supports installation of 32-bit Windows as well.
The performance overhead is negligible with x64 processors. If you install a 32-bit Operating System on x64 based machine, you can continue as normal and then later switch to a 64-bit OS when the market matures.

"Setup has detected that another program requires the computer to reboot. You must reboot the computer before installing Visual Studion Prerequisites. Once the system reboots, you need to restart setup. Click OK to reboot. Click Cancel to exit setup and install later."
I've turned off all apps running in the background, and I've even disabled anti-virus and anti-spyware programs during the install attempts. You seem to know what you're talking about; do you have any ideas about what is going on with my machine? I've successfully installed the same software in an older Pentium III machine running XP Home.
