Microsoft Document Explorer provides a way of interacting with the topics that are written for various products and technologies. You can access the Document Explorer, also Dexplore, by selecting Contents from the Help menu. With Microsoft Document Explorer, you can:

  • Browse topic titles using the Contents window

  • Search for topics by keyword using the Index window

  • Search the full text of topics using the Search page

  • Browse for topics by category using How Do I

  • Bookmark a useful topic or save a complicated search query in the Help Favorite

Is it a seperate program? Can I use it as H2 viewer without VS?

Sure. Just choose the help app in your start menu under the VS installation node. Or look for dexplore.exe in your VS install folder and run that.

One correction: On my system (August CTP) the file dexplore.exe is located in "Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Help 8", not in the VS installation directory.

As a matter of fact, there are two versions of this file: the recent one (August 2005) mentioned above, and one dated 19 March 2003 in "...\Microsoft Shared\Help" (without the trailing " 8").

The older one looks like it's left over from a previous MSDN Library installation. After a test start, the newer one ominously told me it was "updating my help collection"... hope I didn't ruin anything.Sad
