IE7 RC1 Installation error

Hello,

I had previously installed IE7 to try (I think it was Beta 1, but am not sure). I recently tried IE7 RC1, but something was freezing my computer. I unistalled it, properly, I think, everything has been working fine. I wanted to reinstall to try it for longer than an hour. Upon attempting to reinstall I get an error message where the whole screen changes to a DOS appearance but gigger an with a blue shade to it rather than black. The message say something like:

If this is the first time you have seen this message, reboot and try again. If not, there may be a driver error, if there is a driver listed in the stop message, disable it the try to install, or update the driver and try again.

It also talks of rebooting in safe mode.

The stop message is this:

" *** STOP: 0X000008E (0X0000005, 0XEE368B7, 0XEE25AA20, 0X00000000) "

I am running Win XP Home. I have AVG Pro 7.1, Sunbelt CounterSpy 1.5. I have a number of other apps that I don't think will affect it, like Winamp, Firefox, RSS Bandit, etc, but as you can probably tell, I'm not exactly computer saavy.

If there is more info required, let me know. If I have posted in the wrong place, I apologise, I am just looking for a little advice. Thank you in advance.

This is the exact message that comes up:

"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the Stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates. Try changing video adapters.

Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select advance startup options, and then select safe mode.

Technical Information:

*** STOP: 0X0000008E (0X0000005, 0XEEAE78B7, 0XEDEAAA20, 0X00000000)

Beginning dump of physical memory
Physical memory dump complete.
Contact your system administrator or technical support for further assistance."

Thanks again.

Hi,

Please make use of the support available for IE7 at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/support/default.mspx

The forums here are for developer issues and the link above is the best place for support of IE7.

Thanks

Hi,

I did as Dave Massey suggested and checked the IE7 support site, not too much there though for this. I did however call the support line and they were great.

That aside, though, before IE7 support were able to suggest anything, it turned out that I had some hidden Virus / Spyware that both AVG professional and Sunbelt Counterspy didn't catch (that's not entirely true, AVG had quarantined it/them, but from quarantine they were still able to bung things up).

I ended up doing a hard-drive reformat, and reinstall of software. Very time consuming, but I have a nice clean computer now that is speedy and runs without a hitch. IE7 installed just fine too.

Yes,

Your error message above shows what I have every time I turn on my computer. When I restart it goes until I turn my computer on again when it comes.

How do you get rid of it?

See my above message. I called IE7 support, they were helpful, but I think the main problem was a hidden virus on my system that was doing it's work while in quarantine. I reformatted my hard drive. Not fun, but I have a speedy, clean system now.

First step...call support.

I don't think it is a good idea to call support as first step. First step would be read the FAQ, or IE 7.0 Support site.

Also, I wanted to let you know that AVG or other antivirus software can never catch new viruses, worms, and exploits. They pick up old or a few days old viruses only.

Thanks for the info. I'm not sure what you mean by AVG and other av software not catching new viruses. Is this true with even having some form of "active protection" turned on, and are antivirus software any different in that respect, ie. comparing McAfee, Norton, AVG, Trend Micro, etc...

Thanks again.

FYI Virus protection is not a panacea for anything unknown, only a solution to problems that have been experienced. Stop gap programs like Norton, McAfee, AVG, etc, etc, are reverse engineered from the problem that exists, with very minimal, if any, ability to "prevent" viruses. That would require some serious artificial intelligence on the scale of HAL in 2001 Space Odyssey. The free versions out there are as good as any that you pay for, and better than the top of the crop. Happy New Year!
