1) Is it possible to place the witness in an instance of VM Ware?
2) Are there any specific claims on the witness server if this uses SQL Server Express 2005?

The witness just needs to be a SQL Server instance available to the principal and the mirror and should also be located on a different physical computer than either.

1. Yes (title should be VMWare instead of WMWare though)
We have SQL instances in Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2, they run fine
2. Yes, ANY edition of SQL 2005 can act as witness (including Express)
