UX Patterns For Windows Live Mail Desktop and Live Messenger

Live Mail Desktop and Live Messenger are following a very structured approach at the UX level. I was wondering if this UX pattern is described in a white paper and if an example project was available for developers who are trying to build on the Live experience.
