performance of 32 bit applications on 64 bit systems

We are using some demanding MS Access 2000 applications on Windows XP PC's and need them to perform faster.

Will a 64 bit system (e.g. vista 64 + intel core 2 duo) improve performance of 32 bit applications, or will it work better to move to the fastest available 32 bit processor/system?
