Temporary Fix for Offering Remote Assistance error

We are seeing an issue where Offer Remote Assistance breaks after Internet Explorer 7 is installed. The error message generated is "Remote Assistance failed. Please try again."

Has anyone seen this? And, does anyone know how to resolve it?

Thank you, in advance.

Windows XP SP2
Internet Explorer 7 RC1

im afraid these forums are for software development with IE and it appears your question does not fit here. The best place to ask would be the appropriate IE communities:

www.microsoft.com/communities

Thanks!

Thank you for the information. I have removed this as an answer to my question, but understand that the question cannot be answered here.

Furthermore, Microsoft has confirmed that Offer Remote Assistance is broken and have stated that the issue will be resolved in the final release. This information might be useful to anyone programming the use of said feature in IE.

Thank you, again.

Hey guys... I recently experienced the same problem you are experiencing with regards to Remote Assistance. I recently installed IE 7 RC 1 and lost the option to offer Remote Assistance. After doing some research, I found that there is a quirk that will allow the program to work properly.

Cick Start/Search. In the Address bar type hcp://CN=Microsoft%20Corporation,L=Redmond,S=Washington,C=US/Remote%20Assistance/Escalation/Unsolicited/UnSolicitedRCUI.htm

This is the same as clicking a shortcut for "Offer Remote Assistance" but for some reason, it only seems to work this way. I figured this out by accident, but I'm glad I did. Feel free to write with questions... jxd13@health.state.ny.us

Add offer remote assistance to help favorites, then restart help and search and start offer remote assistance from favorites.

I still get the message. "A program could not be started" when trying to do remote assistance all the above ways. Has anyone else seen this error message?

I also can't seem to get any of the fixes to work in ie7 RC 1 on XP SP 2--I get "Automation server can't create oblect." It does work in ie7 RC 1 on Vista RC1 without the need for fixes though.

Hi guys,

I was having the same problem as well with adding it to the Favorites (WinSP2, IE7 RC1).

The only workaround I could come up with was to create a new shortcut (on the desktop) from scratch and copy the path that John Dion mentions above. (hcp://CN=Microsoft%20Corporation,L=Redmond,S=Washington,C=US/Remote%20Assistance/Escalation/Unsolicited/UnSolicitedRCUI.htm) and paste it in the location field. Name it "Offer Remote Assistance" whatever... and...

I can now successfully open the shortcut and use the Offer Remote Assistance as I did with IE6.

Hope that helps.

If you install IE7 final, this should no longer be a problem.

I've had the same situation. No resolution yet. I've tried enabling all scripting, brought down the security level to the lowest, yet, something keeps blocking.
