Hi Jeroen,

"Possible" of course, but "likely", no. The only scenarios that would benefit from selecting all contacts are to export the entire address book to another contacts manager, or to send spam to everyone in the address book.

That's not what the contacts control is intended for. Our goal is to make it easy for end users to use of their contacts with third party web sites in everyday scenarios, such as shopping, sharing, and socializing. None of those scenarios require *all* the contacts in the user's address book.

Hope this helps,

Yes, that's true. But if a user wants to select more contacts than he has to leave unselected, it would be very handy for him/her to have a button which says "select all". And ofcourse, when he/her has selected some contacts he/she wants to all deselect, he/she can hit "select none". Those are quite standard buttons in multiple check form usability.

No argument from me! We are merely the conduit to the data. The terms of data use and data protection are set primarily by the keepers of the data. :/

I still don't understand why.
- End users can send spam a lot easier by just selecting every contact in Windows Live Mail and clicking "E-mail contact".
- If an end user wants to export his/her contacts to another contacts manager, so be it! Exporting contacts is possible almost everywhere.

In the end, it is the end user who decides whether to (de)select all data or not ...and also the one who gets RSI clicking 50 times on a mouse button, cursing the otherwise so wonderful tool.

Hi Kratpalm,

The Contacts Control does not prevent the end user from sending spam or exporting their entire address book to another system, but then it also does not make these actions a simple one click operation. The end user can do it, with a small amount of effort. Bulk operations are not the primary focus of the contacts control.

The scenario that we're most concerned about is a malicious or deceptive web site using the contacts control to trick a naieve end user into spamming everyone they know. Plaxo, for example, was burned by this a few months ago. A third party web site using Plaxo behind the scenes did not make it clear what would happen when people transfered contacts from external sources into the third party site (via Plaxo), and so when Plaxo's default policy of sending a welcome email to each transferred contact kicked in, people screamed foul. The truly sad part is that people blamed Plaxo for this rather than the web site that was orchestrating the operation.
