Live Alerts & Visual Basic 2005

Hi everyone,

I'd like to know if anybody has some sample code using Visual Basic 2005 to send a Live Alert to Windows Live Messenger.

I'd like to do some research on this topic but am not really sure where I should start.

Are Live Alerts free for business use ?

Thanks,

ST

Thanks MattY for the info. Unfortunatelly it looks like this page is targeted to end users and not really developers.

I'm already signed up for the service but the menu options that show allow me to specify my time zone, my quiet times, etc. I couldn't really find examples on how to generate alerts with an application (VB 2005 in my particular case) and send them to users.

Would you have any other pointers please ?

Thanks for your time,

ST

Hi ST, the process is simple. Your application needs to create and update an RSS feed. Next, register the feed url with the alerts service, wait a few minutes for a confirmation email and then distribute the subscription link in the confirmation email to your users. That's it. The alerts service will watch your feed and send alerts to subscribers when the feed is updated.

Thanks again MattY!

I'm still a bit confused... All I need is to keep my customers @hotmail.com addresses in my database and send them alerts everytime an event happens within my system. No blogs, no web pages, just a simple plain Windows VB.2005 application.

Is this possible todo ? I'd guess so...

Thanks,

ST

Windows Live Alerts is an opt-in system, meaning your users individually must sign-up for alerts from you before you send alerts to them. There is no way to tell the alerts service to push an alert to a list of email addresses. Sorry. :)

Thanks again MattY!!!

You said "your users individually must sign-up for alerts from you" so my question now is simple. Do I need to have a web site with some form that sends user's data to Microsoft Alerts page or do I need to register with Microsoft and provide some link (from Microsoft) on my site for the users to register, or is there another way I missed completely?

Is what I'm trying to accomplish odd ? Am I the only one trying to use this service ? :)

Thanks again for your time,

ST

1. You need to register an RSS feed with the alerts service at http://signup.alerts.msn.com/alerts/editSignup.do.
2. You will receive a confirmation email from the alerts service containing a signup url which you can post on a blog, website or email it directly to your users. Each of your users individually must click on this link to subscribe to your alerts.

If you still have questions, please refer to the information provided at http://signup.alerts.live.com/

Hope this helps :)
