Do you mean to ask where can he develop his skills and knowledge or do you want advise on how he can improve his current game?
Either way can you give us a link to the game so we can check it out?
Hi Bland,
I'll download and have a go of the game on my personal machine when I get home tonight. Games development is a hobby of mine and I was fortunate enough to go to a university which specialised in games and animation so might be able to give you a few pointers on where to go to develop his skills.
Check back later for a response!
Craig.
Hi again Bland, sorry I didn't reply early but i've been a little busy with a work project. It's obvious your son enjoys RPG, point and click games. I'd never heard of byond before now.
I'd recommend that your son continue along the path of using generators to create games for the moment. a good one is AdventureGameStudio which allows you to create point-and-click games such as those from Sierra and Lucas Arts (Monkey Island etc).
Once he's ready to advance into programming they should start with the fundamentals in .NET programming and then eventually when he's good at .NET programming he should move into DirectX which now has an SDK which is fully managed code which can be used by .NET developers. DirectX will set your boy up with the knowledge and skills he will need for a career in games development.
I personally prefer to program vb.net but I'd recommend that if your son is soley interested in game programming that he start off down the C# path as traditionally games developers come from a C++ background and naturally are migrating to C#.NET. This is the reason that 90% of all DirectX examples out there are written in c#.
A good book when ready for DirectX is "Managed Direct X 9 - Graphics and Game Programming".
Most of my recommendations are probably quite advanced for a 12 year old but will definitely get him on the right track. My brother is showing a real interest for similar things and he's 14.
