Multiple problems trying to add third-party gadgets to Live

First of all let me say that we did not seem to have these problems as of August 29th, 2006.

We are having some erratic behavior from Windows Live where we are only able to add a gadget successfully a small percentage of the time. If we call the live.com?add URL, we have found that when Live hits our servers for the manifest, sometimes the content-length returns as 0, sometimes the correct length comes back. Due to this, we have problems were we are stuck with a terminal "Loading content" message, or we have an empty IFRAME. If we hit the same URL the Live proxy is calling, we get the content back without any trouble.

When we try to add the gadget using the "Subscribe" box under advanced options, normally we get a message saying "This feed can not be added. Please try again later." However, we found that our servers were not actually hit at all.

Our gadgets are not inline, like Donovan's are (we compare them side by side and other than that they seem to be the same). The thing is, we haven't changed anything on our end, and the behavior is completely inconsistent. We suspect that there may be some issue with the proxies being used to fetch the gadget content, but we're not sure as we only see this problem with our own gadgets (have had 0 luck finding any other 3rd party gadgets besides his).

Anybody have any thoughts as to what is going on?

Addendum: We also see that sometimes we get a "successful" add, but the proxy does not hit our servers. There seems to be some "streaky" caching going on at the same time that sometimes our gadgets add and sometimes they do not.

Sounds like it's a problem with your web server. Have you checked your logs? Do you have multiple servers in a farm where one or more servers might be bad? I've been able to consistently add gadgets to live.com from my own web host without any problems since last November, so I doubt it's a problem with live.com itself.

Also, Donavon's gadgets don't run inline. He gets iframed just like the rest of us. :)

We actually discovered the problem the next day. It was, in fact, a screwup in our DNS servers that would allow the hostname to resolve about 50% of the time. Quite maddening, I tell you =]
