Vista search interoperability

It appears that Vista supports distributed search.

Is the distributed search limited to Vista - Vista / Vista - Longhorn only (as suggested in some web pages)

Or does / will Vista support (a) Vista - Win 2000/2003; & (b) Vista -SMB/CIFS?

Assuming that indices are maintained in separate servers, is interoperability achieved via Indigo or some other means? Where can I find the information?

Regarding security - how does the Vista search only return documents accessible to a user in the single-server and multi-server (distributed) cases? Is AD or an identity management scheme (InfoCards) mandatory (on all servers)?

Answers to these questions will help my colleagues and me plan the introduction of Vista in a number of legacy infrastructure environments.

Thank you.

I'm not sure this has been decided yet. There will be support for Vista-Vista queries, but downlevel support may be achieved through installing a downlevel distribution of the windows search platform, for example via Office12 or MSN Desktop.
