Installing Windows Workflow Foundation Beta 1

There have been several threads with questions about installing Windows Workflow Foundation Beta 1. I'm hoping to summarize the installation instructions for anyone else that might be having trouble. These instructions are also available on the WindowsWorkflow.net community sitehere.

Windows Workflow Foundation Beta 1 is compatible with the .NET Framework and Visual Studio 2005 Beta 2 (builds 50215.44 & 50215.45). Windows Workflow Foundation Beta 1is notcompatible with the Beta 2+ build of Visual Studio 2005 that was provided on the goods disks at the PDC 2005 conference.

If you only want to utilize Windows Workflow Foundation for development purposes, then you can just install the Visual Studio 2005 Extensions for Windows Workflow Foundation. However, if you wish to also use other WinFx components, then please follow these steps:

1.Install the WinFx Runtime Components – September CTP
This installation includes the runtime components for Windows Communication Foundation ("Indigo"), Windows Presentation Foundation ("Avalon"), and Windows Workflow Foundation.
A. (Optional)Install the SDK for the WinFx Runtime Components – September CTP
This installation includes the SDK for the Windows Communication Foundation and the Windows Presentation Foundation.
B. (Optonal)Install the Visual Studio 2005 Extensions for WinFx – September CTP
These extensions are designed for the Windows Communication Foundation and Windows Presentation Foundation.
2.Install the Visual Studio 2005 Extensions for Windows Workflow Foundation
This installation package includes the workflow runtime components, Visual Studio designer extensions and templates, and the Windows Workflow Foundation SDK.

Is it planned to release a Windows Workflow Foundation version that is compatible with VS.NET released at the PDC conference?

No. The next release of Windows Workflow Foundation is Beta 2 which is scheduled for December.

I assume that the Not Compatible would also apply to the Visual Studio 2005 Team Suite - Release Candidate posted in the MSDN subscriber downloads on 9-12. Do you know when a version compatible with this version of VS would be?
Thanks

Correct.

There's some discussion about releasing an RC compatible version, but the plans are not finalized at this point.

I hate to be a pest, but has there been any movement on supporting the RCs of .Net and VS.Net in the past few days? At the very least, do you have plans for supporting the RTMs for the same?

We're looking into it. Sorry I don't have a better answer, but as you can imagine aligning releases is challenging. The Beta 2 release scheduled for late this calendar year will definitely use the RTM version.

I'll post some information to the forum as soon as a new release is available.

While installing the SDK for the WinFx Runtime Components, it has been taking long time for installation, Can you say the reason for it..,

We are part of SDK for WinFX runtime components (documentation and samples) but we don't own the installation. I am not sure if this is the right forum to ask this question.

James,

Quick question, I installed WWF with the Beta 2 build and everything was working fine. I uninstalled the Beta 2 build and everything except WWF to install the RC of VS. When I attempt to open VS RC, I get the VS splash screen and then it goes away and VS doesn't continue to load. I don't see WWF in the ARP listing. I am *assuming* the problem is with WWF incompatibility. If so, what is the GUID I can pass to msiexec /u to uninstalll WWF?

Thanks,
Nick Parker

How did you install WWF Beta1 - standalone or as part of WinFX?
Anyways, try this GUID

Thanks Iza, I will give that GUID a try when I get home tonight. I installed WWF Beta 1 as a standalone.

What is the OS - Vista? If so, it is a known issue on Vista Beta1 with ARP entries not being created.
