Regsvcs.exe causing installation of .NET 2.0 to freeze...aghhh

When I attempt to install .NET Framework 2.0 x32, the installerkeeps freezing while registering

System.EnterpriseServices.dll by running RegSvcs.exe while invoking

/bootstrapi.

I have the latest msinstaller (I think). I can make the installer finish after killing the regsvcs process, but then computer runs (displays?) really slow. I think the .NET framework is associated with my video card software.

Anyone know what this is and what I can do to remedy it?

IT'S DRIVING ME CRAZY!!!

Hi,

Can you please try the workarounds suggested at http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2006/05/17/600677.aspx and see if any of them help solve this issue on your system?

Thanks! Aaron

Aaron,
Thanks heaps for the help, but unfortunately it only partly worked.
The dialog box came up as you suggested and the installer moved on but it almost immediately came up with an error (one of those ones that reports back to MS).
I sent the error report to MS and the installer then continued again for a bit, before freezing again on "Installing native images" and executing "ngen.exe install"

AGHH.

Again, thanks for you help, but have you got any further ideas?

Hi,

Could you please locate the log file named %temp%\dd_netfx20msi*.txt and zip and send it to me in email so I can take a look? You can send it to Aaron.Stebner (at) microsoft (dot) com.

Thanks! Aaron

Speddo,

I have run into precisely the same scenario as you. My installation of the .NET Framework 2.0 froze/hung as it was "Registering System.Enterprise Services.dll" -- Executing: "C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\Regsvcs.exe" /bootstrapi

I finally killed the Regsvcs.exe process as it was consuming nearly 100% CPU time and it was clear it had stalled. The installation appeared to progress normally until I ran into a couple of "ngen.exe" process hangs while "Installing native images".

My errors did not trigger a box to report back to MS.

Any insight as to what caused this? Do we have corrupted files in our installation as a result?

Thanks,

Howie

Howie,
I was unable to get it to work and in the end I gave up and (after further pain) went back to .NET 1.1

Aaron, the other poster to this thread, has been most helpful but it think my registry is in such a state that it won't get though,,,working on that now.

The worst part is that the install logs show a successful install after going though the process you described above.
I suggest you keep look (as I will do) but I get the impression that it could have to do with leftovers of previous .NET installs (that seems to be a common problem with all .NET versions)

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Hey all,

For anyone else who runs into this type of issue in the future, I've seen the following workarounds help resolve similar issues. You may want to try these out on your systems as well:

  1. Disable services using MsConfig - http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2006/11/25/disabling-services-with-msconfig-to-work-around-setup-failures.aspx
  2. Run the .NET Framework cleanup tool described at http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2006/05/30/611355.aspx and then try installing again
  3. Disable Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator service - http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2006/01/08/510677.aspx
  4. Check data execution prevention (DEP) settings - http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2005/07/27/444085.aspx
  5. Check OS locale settings - http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2005/07/24/442747.aspx
  6. Check NT4 SP6 imaging settings (.NET 1.0 and 1.1 only) - http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2005/08/23/455401.aspx
  7. Try to workaround timing issue that can occur during setup in some cases - http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2006/05/17/workaround-for-possible-timing-issue-that-can-cause-net-framework-setup-failures.aspx

1/7/07 & I am having the same problem with .NET Framework 2.0. Also with security update KB886906 for .NET framework 1.0. Two months since your post & MS still has not fixed this problem nor have they withdrawn the item from new downloads.

Help. I tried to install the .NET 2.0 Framework on a Windows 2000 Advanced Server system and the installed stalled/hung at the stage

Installing native images

Executing: c:\WINNT\Microsoft.NET\v2.0.50727\ngen.exe install "mscorlib,Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral. PublicKey Token=b77a5c561934e089" /NoDependencies / nologo

What can I do to uninstall this and get my system running again. Task Manager shows the ngen.exe CPU at 99% and the install bar(blue bar) is not progressing.

How do I stop the install? The cancel button is greyed out and not selectable!
