Is there a way to detect if the map contains "No image available" tiles?

I looked through the API and couldn't find any clues. The problem I'm trying to address is this: The user sets the map to Aerial mode and zooms in on a rural area in China. But beyond a certain zoom level, she finds the "No image available" tiles. Instead, we'd like to automatically switch the map view to Road mode. Any ideas how this can be done?
